BAKERSFIELD, California. (KGET) — California is known for many things: beaches, theme parks, and famous landmarks. But, one less popular aspect: the price.
House hunters can find properties in the $1 million range in Bakersfield, Fresno, and even San Diego. But in San Francisco or Los Angeles, you can get less than what you bargained for.
Here’s a comparison of similarly priced homes in each major city in California.
Kern makes the list of the lowest-earning counties in California
bakersfield
Bakersfield is considered one of the most affordable of the bunch. One million dollars includes many of the city’s top tier homes. There are only a few homes on the market in the $1 million price range.
Typically, you can get over 3,000 square feet with four bedrooms. At the beginning of June there were only four homes listed in that price range.
For example, according to the Zillow website, there is a 3,587-square-foot home with four bedrooms and three bathrooms located in the gated community Masterpiece Estates.
In addition to some $1 million homes, there are vacant lots available for new homes to be built.
fresno
Fresno is very similar. Typically, that price tag can get you a lot over 3,000 square feet with four bedrooms plus vacant lots for new construction.
For example, there is a 3,695-square-foot home with four bedrooms and four bathrooms near Golden State Highway, according to Zillow.
Bonus: According to Zillow, this home has six attached garage spaces.

San Diego
In San Diego, buyers can typically find homes in the 2,000-square-foot range for $1 million.
For example, according to Zillow, there’s a 2,121-square-foot home with five bedrooms and three bathrooms located near the San Carlos area.
According to the Zillow website, this home has a fireplace and stainless steel appliances.
In San Diego, the lot goes for about $1.1 million and is primarily marketed to multi-family constructions, according to the Zillow website.
Los Angeles
In the busy City of Angels, home hunters can find slightly smaller homes and condos in the $1 million price range.
Buyers will find square footage in the Hollywood Hills ranging from an 868-square-foot home with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a car garage to a 1,144-square-foot condo near South Park with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. According to Zillow, Los Angeles is slightly more expensive than the Central Valley.
According to Zillow, the condo also has a view of the city and features in-building amenities including a hot tub, pool, movie room, and a fitness center.
Similar to San Diego, vacant lots range from $1 to $1.2 million and are marketed to multi-family constructions, according to the Zillow website.

San Francisco
San Francisco is considered one of the most expensive places to live in America, with buyers typically finding homes and condos in the 1,000-square-foot range and below, depending on location.
Starting with an 876-square-foot condo in the East Cut portion of San Francisco, featuring one bedroom and one bathroom, according to the Zillow website. According to Zillow, it also comes with an in-unit washer, dryer, and dishwasher.
For homes in the Bay Area, buyers can find a home near Bernal Heights for a little over $1 million. For example, the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART System) and San Francisco Muni have a 1,221-square-foot home with two bedrooms and one bathroom listed, or $1.1 million but that is “a fixer in need of major repairs.” According to the Zillow website.
So, the real question is: what would you spend $1 million on space or space?
