National survey: Teachers believe whole child learning gives students the skills they need to succeed

43 percent of parents are concerned that their child is not learning the right skills in school to be successful in the future.

REDWOOD CITY, Cal., May 9, 2022 /PRNewsWire/ — Education nonprofit Gradient Learning has released the results of a national survey, which shows that 91% of teachers believe that when school is an integral part of the whole child’s learning. Students perform better if priority is given.

Conducted in partnership with Project Tomorrow, the Gradient Learning Poll surveyed 1,418 teachers in grades 4-12 across the country to better understand their views on the state of education. Participants spanned the national education landscape with 42% supporting suburban communities, 30% in rural communities, and 28% responding teachers in urban communities.

Now more than ever, teachers, families and caregivers are calling for a broader focus on the social and emotional needs of students as well as the development of future-ready skills. the report indicates The past two years of the pandemic have widened the skills gap, and many schools are responding to this demand by providing a whole child approach to education. The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development defines whole-child learning as policies, practices, and relationships that ensure that every child, in every school, in every community, is engaged, supported and challenged.

In addition to agreeing that students tend to do better with child learning throughout:

  • 88% said they believe schools need to adopt a broader definition of student success to include both academic and non-academic skills
  • 62% shared that students are more comfortable asking for help with a whole child perspective
  • Nearly two-thirds report that their students take more ownership of their learning as a direct result of adopting the whole child approach

As one Colorado district leader shared, “Students don’t come to school just to take exams. They come to school to learn, work as a team, and build life skills. Knowing this. There is no better feeling than that you are meeting the needs of all your students.”
