Los Angeles discussed as #1 city on Orkin’s 2022 Mosquito Cities list
With Memorial Day—the unofficial start to summer in America—approaching, the public health threat of these pesky insects will only increase as outdoor activities and summer gatherings become more popular. As part of Orkin’s “Mosquitoes Don’t Deserve a Drop” campaign, pest control leaders will donate $25 each to the Red Cross mosquito control service Purchased for up to $150,000 from May 24 to June 30, 2022.
“We are already fighting the mosquito front by helping protect customers nationwide with our mosquito services, but we are committed to doing more,” said Orkin President Freeman Elliott. “Our partnership with the Red Cross is one that we really embrace. Keeping the yard free of mosquitoes is very important to us and it is a true honor to be able to do so while supporting a relevant and important cause.”
Additionally, to boost our nation’s blood supply, Orkin is inviting the public to pledge to donate blood through the Red Cross through the SleevesUp campaign by June 30, 2022.
“We are extremely grateful for Orkin’s continued support as our partnership enters its third year,” said Kamena Lee, vice president of marketing and direct to donor recruitment with the American Red Cross. “Our blood supply remains vulnerable, and we are grateful to Orkin for encouraging donations during the challenging summer months.”

More than 200 types of mosquitoes live in the continental US and its territories. They typically become active when temperatures are above 68 degrees Fahrenheit overnight, and the breeding season can begin as early as May and last until September.
“Mosquitoes thrive in warm temperatures and after rain,” said Frank Meek, Orkin’s technical services manager. “These insects are able to lay their eggs in lower pools and reproduce rapidly, turning from larva to adult in a matter of weeks.”
However, as painful as mosquito bites can be, the diseases they are capable of transmitting are the real danger. It’s important to be prepared for what West Nile virus is known to transmit, in addition to other diseases like East Nile encephalitis and Zika.
Tips to repel mosquitoes and prevent their bites include:
- Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Mosquitoes can bite from tight clothing.
- Apply an EPA-registered mosquito repellent containing products such as DEET, picaridin or IR3535.
- Eliminate standing water in bird feeders, water bowls for pets, potted plants, wading pools and other children’s toys.
- Regularly clean debris in gutters that provide moisture and port.
