HSBC reduces opening hours of 122 branches – Full list of affected banks

HSBC is set to reduce its opening hours in over 100 bank branches.

The banking giant previously reduced its opening hours during the COVID pandemic, but has confirmed plans to make some of the changes permanent.

According to a MoneySavingExpert report, the opening hours of some 122 branches will be reduced, with up to 30% cut in opening hours at some sites.

HSBC said 148 sites would increase their opening hours by 30 minutes per day and 171 branches would remain unchanged.

The bank has 441 branches across the UK, but has been reducing the number of sites it operates in recent years.

In March, the firm revealed plans to close another 69 branches permanently this year.

The move led to the closure of 82 HSBC branches last year and 27 in 2020.

The bank blames the low footfall for the changes. More customers are using online and app-based banking instead of their local branch.

This trend has accelerated since the Covid lockdown, when many businesses were forced to close their high street stores.

It is not the only bank to close branches. Last week, Barclays confirmed it would be closing another 27 sites this year, bringing the total number of closures for 2022 to 103.

What will be the new opening hours?

From this month, 172 “cash service branches” HSBC branches will be open from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm on weekdays and will be closed on weekends.

Another 163 branches will remain open from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm on weekdays and from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm on Saturdays.

These will be a mix of “digital service” branches (countless sites offering self-service technology) and “full service” branches, which provide a full range of services.

Meanwhile, 105 branches will remain open from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm on weekdays and will remain closed on weekends. These are also a mix of digital and full service sites.

Only one branch in London, Gerard Street, will be open on Sundays from 11.30am to 3pm.

HSBC said its 148 cash service branches will extend their opening hours by 30 minutes.

But the 96 full service branches will reduce their opening hours by 60 minutes.

There will be a 30% reduction in hours for some 24 cash service branches and two digital service sites. Customers of these branches will be contacted.

HSBC isn’t the only banking group to have shortened opening hours.

Santander recently announced plans to cut its hours at hundreds of branches.

The changes mean that most sites will operate from 9.30 am to 3 pm on weekdays instead of 4.30 pm from July.

The shake-up will close 316 of its 450 branches on Saturdays at 12.30 pm instead of 4 pm.
